Mumbai: In a historic medical achievement, a 14-month-old severely underweight infant suffering from Achalasia Cardia was successfully treated with India’s youngest Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) at Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai. The child, weighing just 5.9 kg, was unable to swallow food and faced persistent vomiting, recurrent pneumonia, and severe malnutrition. The scarless, advanced endoscopic procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Vibhor Borkar, Dr. Shankar Zanwar, and Dr. Rajan Daftari, marking a major milestone in paediatric gastroenterology in India.
